Lucy ~ Movie Review

Fresh from her role as The Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson reprises a Milla Jovovich-esq character in a re-imagining of Limitless. In short if you're looking for a kick ass female character with an intellectual plot line (and some Morgan Freeman airtime), then this ideal for your tastes.

It honestly looks like someone read the plot of  Limitless and thought that all the genius intellectual furthering of the main character was great but it lacked a strong female lead and some out standing stunts and CGI. In steps Luc Besson (writer/ director of memorable aces such as La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element.

Starting out as an ordinary party girl in Taipai, Lucy is mistakenly involved in the drug mule trade. Which I daresay could have still had a happy ending if the implanted bag hadn't been ruptured, releasing all of the mind altering drugs into her system in a massive dose.

The film progresses at pace as the chemicals unlock more and more of her potential brain power, enabling feats of medical foresight and technological abilities to be envied by the greatest genius. Not to mention all the shiny new fighting capabilities she now has access to.

Along the way she ropes in a couple of side-kicks Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman), the leading authority on the human mind, and French police captain Pierre Del Rio (Amr Waked). Who both forget that aiding and abetting a drug criminal is strictly illegal, whilst chasing down the baddies and generally enjoying her company. Sarcasm to the side they both seem 'unselfishly' obsessed with her potential and 'ahem' personality.

Despite its slight plot-holes; the sci-fi potential for saving the world is taken to a new level with the addition of the seedy world of modern day chemical enhancements. The 'The Matrix' style graphics lend themselves well to the scenario of an unknown world of knowledge and power.

However, like with The Matrix, I can not help but wonder if the simplest explanation isn't the truth.
Perhaps she just took a pill too many (regardless of colour) and just went on an epic trip of the aforementioned drugs.
Perhaps she isn't being hunted by a bad corporation, she's just lying in a pile of her own vomit after indulging heavily on a night out.
Perhaps there really is no potential for all knowing beings, with the power of life and death in their heeled high kicks.

Still, its great film, appealing to all sci-fi fans with the potential to become as much a cult film as The Fifth Element.
